Key Moments in Malaysia’s Journey
Independence did not happen in a single moment. It was the result of negotiations, public announcements, national ceremonies and the later formation of Malaysia.
20 February 1956 — The Promise of Independence
After returning from independence negotiations in London, Tunku Abdul Rahman announced in Malacca that the Federation of Malaya would achieve independence. The announcement became one of the defining public milestones in the country’s journey towards self-government and independence.
31 August 1957 — The Birth of an Independent Nation
At the Selangor Club Padang around midnight, the Union Jack was lowered and the flag of the Federation of Malaya was raised as “Negaraku” was played. Later that morning at Stadium Merdeka, Tunku Abdul Rahman formally proclaimed the independence of the Federation of Malaya.
A Nation Celebrates
The declaration of independence was followed by public celebrations, ceremonies and parades as people marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Federation of Malaya. These celebrations reflected the optimism of a newly independent country.
16 September 1963 — The Formation of Malaysia
Malaysia was officially formed on 16 September 1963 through the federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Singapore later became an independent republic in 1965.
Today, 16 September is commemorated as Malaysia Day, recognising the formation of the country and the contributions of its different regions and communities.
