Haze affecting Singapore and parts of southern Malaysia has become an important consideration for travellers moving between Johor Bahru and Singapore in September 2026.

Why Is Haze Affecting Johor Bahru & Singapore?
Dry conditions and regional fire activity in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan have produced smoke plumes that can move towards Singapore and southern Peninsular Malaysia depending on prevailing winds.
Singapore’s National Environment Agency reported in early September 2026 that moderate to dense smoke from southern and central Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan had been drifting towards Singapore.
What Is the Current Singapore Haze Situation?
On 4 September 2026, Singapore’s 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index entered the Unhealthy range in the Central region. NEA said this was the first time Singapore’s PSI had entered the Unhealthy range because of haze since October 2023.
By 6 September, Singapore’s 24-hour PSI was back in the Moderate range, but NEA continued to forecast a risk of conditions reaching the higher end of Moderate to the lower end of Unhealthy if regional fires persisted.

Does Haze Affect the Johor–Singapore Checkpoints?
Haze itself does not normally close Woodlands or Tuas checkpoints. Immigration procedures remain separate from air-quality conditions.
